"Let the children come to me. For the kingdom of God belongs to such as they." Mark 10:14
This, in a nutshell is my stand on abortion:
Don't Do It!!
That has been my stand for as long as I can remember. Even at 19, when I was an unwed and found out I was pregnant, the thought never crossed my mind. My husband and I would not trade our son for anything--even though we were not ready to be parents. But then again, is anyone ever truly ready to be a parent?
You see, every child is a gift from God. God gives us children and we, in turn, are to raise them up to understand God's love and to teach them His word. We are not to murder them!!
Now, all of this is just my personal opinion. Please do not be offended in any way, shape, or form. Please, honor my freedom of speech.
I got tickled a few days ago when I went to Wal-Mart (a super discount store) on my lunch break from work. I work a 12-hour night shift, so this is around 2:00am. A man, woman, and 2 small children got out of a van and they made their way into the store. I caught site of a bumper sticker on the back of the van and just had to smile. We all entered the store at about the same time and walked passed the greeter. He asked the children if they were tired (this was an understatement!!) and the mother replied that they had just gotten back from the state fair. Bingo!! That's where the bumper sticker came from.
What did the bumper sticker say? This:
If it's not a BABY, you're not PREGNANT!
How did I know it came from the state fair? Well, it looked like a new sticker and the National Right To Life Committee, or one of their affiliates always has a booth there with stickers, pamphlets, etc. The following is from one of their pamphlets.
Would you consider abortion in any of the following situations? 1. There is a preacher and wife who are very, very, poor. They already have 14 kids. Now, she finds out she's pregnant with the 15th. They're living in tremendous poverty. Considering their poverty and the excessive world population, would you consider recommending she get an abortion?
2. The father is sick with the sniffles, the mother has TB. They have 4 children. 1st is blind, 2nd is dead, 3rd is deaf, 4th has TB. She finds out she's pregnant again. Given the extreme situation, would you consider recommending abortion?
3. A white man raped a 13-year-old black girl and she got pregnant. If you were her parents, would you consider recommending an abortion?
4. A teenage girl is pregnant. She's not married, her finance is not the father, and he's very upset. Would you consider recommending an abortion?
In the firt case, you have killed John Wesley, one of the great evangelists in the 19th century. In the second case, you killed Beethoven. In the third case, you have killed Ethel Waters, the great black gospel singer. And, most of all, if you said yes to the fourth case, you have just declared the murder of Jesus Christ!
The Facts
1. There have been more than 35 million abortions since 1973.
2. There are more than 3,900 abortions every day. That's at least one every 23 seconds.
3. For every 1,000 live births, there are 321 abortions.
4. By the sixth week of pregnancy, brain waves are detectable, every organ is in place and functioning, and the fingerprints begin to form.
5. There are more than 170,000 second and third trimester abprtons each year. More than 18,500 occur around the fourth month (20 weeks).
6. Every year, more unborn children die from abortion than Americans died in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf Wars combined.
Defining "Abortion"
The term "abortion" actually refers to any premature expulsion of a human fetus, wether naturally spontaneous, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced, as in a surgical or chemical abortion. Today, the most common usage of the term "abortion" applies to artificially induced abortion.
In 1973, the Supreme Court handed down its Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton decisions legalizing abortion in all 50 states during all nine months of pregnancy, for any reason, medical, social, or otherwise.
The vast majority of all abortions performed today are done for social, not medical reasons---because a woman doesn't feel ready for a baby at the time, because her partner wants her to have the abortion, etc. Approximately 93% of all induced abortions are done for elective, non-medical reasons such as these.
Abortion ends a pregnancy by destroying and removing the developing child. that baby's heart has already begun to beat by the time the mother misses her period and begins to wonder if she might be pregnant (about 31 days after the mother's last menstrual period, or LMP).
Surgical abortions are usually not performed before 7 weeks, or 49 days LMP. By that time, the baby has identifiable arms and legs (45 days) and displays measurable brain waves (about 40 days). During the seventh through tenth weeks, when the majority of abortions are performed, fingers and genitals appear and the child's face is recognizably human.
Please, if you know someone who is considering an abortion, help them research all of the information and pray for them to make the right choice. Don't condemn them if they go through with their decision--pray instead that God touch their life and that they might be saved.
You may ask "Can someone who has had an abortion still be saved?" I answer with a resounding YES. God forgives anyone for anything if they ask and accept Jesus into their heart and life. But, only they can make that decision also....
