On July 2, 2001, we went out to Oklhoma City to visit the memorial. We were there in Oklahoma, visiting my family who live in Tulsa and we took a 2 day trip down to OKC to go to Frontier City and to visit the memorial.

The tree pictured above is known as the "Survivor Tree". It survived the blast of the bomb. It stood outside the front of the Murrah building. The circular promontory surrounding the tree offers a place for gathering and viewing the memorial.

Anyone who has visited this memorial cannot say that it did not touch them in a very strong manner. This was about the most heart-wrenching memorial I have ever been to. To walk there and to see the devestation that happened in the museum, it is unreal.

The whole memorial takes about 2-3 hours to tour. There is a museum where they have the personal effects of those who were killed that was taken from the building. There are brief cases, childrens shoes, coffee cup remains, eye glasses, and the list goes on. There is an area where they play the feelings and thoughts of the rescue workers, survivors, and the family members of those killed on video tape.

There is still a fence outside of the memorial where you can leave something. I saw many cards from people who attended the same high school that I did in Tulsa. There were cards from people from all over the world. These pieces of fence are taken down and new ones put up periodically. They are stored in the museum archives.

When you enter the memorial, you enter through 1 of 2 gates. There is a time at the top of each. One says 9:01 and the other says 9:03. The reflecting pool between the two represents 9:02, which is the time that the bomb went off. The walkways are made from the granite that the Alfred P. Murrah building was made of.

The chairs represent each person who was killed. They are arranged in rows according to where they were in or around the building when the blast occured. When we visited, they were mowing in this area and they cut the grass directly around the chairs with scissors.

I have tried to understand why something like this happened here. I am sure that all of the victims families have done this also. We hear about this happening so much in other countries, such as Ireland, and Israel. I guess that no one country is safe from events such as these. I have many more photos and will upload them soon.
